The Barkery FAQs

Whoops! If you’ve clicked the blog link in our November Pupup email, we’ve taken you to the wrong place. Click here for the “Great Eight” ways to help your local shelter.

WOW - what a week it’s been! Thank you all so much for your support, and it was lovely to meet all of the wonderful humans and doggos who came to our first Pup-Up event.

We’ve had a lot of questions about The Barkery, so we’ve put together a quick FAQ to help you out. You can always email us - woof@thebarkerychch.co.nz - or send us a message on Facebook with any other questions!

About The Pups

Where do the adoptable dogs come from?

The Barkery currently works with Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust and Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue, who choose the rescue dogs that come to the Barkery events. The lovely people at the shelters know their dogs really well, and know which dogs will enjoy a busy Barkery environment!

Who looks after the dogs at The Barkery?

Our adoptable dogs will arrive in the morning, spend the day at the cafe, and return to their temporary shelter home in the afternoon - leaving lots of time for walkies!

We’ve done the mahi to make sure The Barkery is a safe and enjoyable space for rescue dogs, and we will continue to work closely with the shelters to make sure they’re 100% comfortable with their dogs spending time with us.

Will The Barkery be safe for dogs and for people?

Absolutely. We know that we’re going to have great dogs and great customers, and the permanent Barkery has measures in place to make sure everyone has a safe and happy time.

Before spending time with the adoptable dogs, customers will have a quick briefing session to make sure they’re comfortable interacting with a dog they don’t know well.  There will always be a staff member on hand to keep an eye on interactions and make sure everyone is having a great time!
For safety reasons, children under 5 won’t be able to interact with the adoptable dogs.

All of our Pup-Up events are attended by Dogwatch or Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue staff.

About The Barkery

Where are you located?

The Barkery is launching over summer with a series of one-off Pup-Up events at awesome venues across Christchurch.  We’ll be looking for the perfect premises and launching our permanent cafe space in 2020.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! All of our Pup-Ups are dog-friendly, and the permanent Barkery will have a big outdoor space (separate from the adoptable dog areas) where you can bring your own four-legged-friend.

Please do bring your doggo (on a leash) to our Pup-Ups, we would love to meet them.

What kind of food do you serve?

The permanent Barkery will serve a healthy, tasty range of dog and people food.

Does it cost to come to your events?

No - all of our events are free to attend! We would love it if you supported our amazing venues by buying a snack or a drink, and you can bring koha for our shelters.

How To Support

Can I work or volunteer at The Barkery?

We aren’t currently hiring, but send us your CV and we’ll get in touch when we’re closer to opening our permanent cafe.  We may need volunteers at some of our Pup-Ups, so please email us if you’re keen!

You can also support our shelters directly - just check out the Dogwatch and Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue websites for how to help.

I’m in business and would like to supply, sponsor or otherwise support The Barkery - how do I get in touch?

Email us at woof@thebarkerychch.co.nz - we’re always open to a great collab and would love to hear from you.
